This Trinidadian American was an internationally known, jazz singer & pianist who also performed in several films as herself. She first started playing piano at age 3 under the guidance of her mother. She moved with her family to the U.S. in 1924 where she started performing in New York City and receiving scholarships to study classical music at the #Juilliard School of Music — all of this by age 8. As a young adult, she made a name for herself playing jazz, blues, ballads, and classical music in various nightclubs. By 1945, Scott was earning $75,000 (roughly $1,000,000 today) a year. Ms. Scott married Reverend and Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. in 1945. In 1950, she became the first woman of color to have her own TV show, The Hazel Scott Show. Along with Lena Horne, Scott was one of the first African-American women to garner respectable roles in major Hollywood films. Scott had long been committed to civil rights in the film and music industry, refusing to play stereotypical roles or perform in segregated venues. A truly amazing woman. Look her up.
